Leadership and Disabled Peoples Organisations
Leadership is about inspiring people. A leader is someone that brings people together to recognise challenges, share issues, map out and make happen a desired change. Disabled People are excellent leaders in the way they tackle discrimination and create inclusive environments and opportunities. This section shows some of the leadership work undertaken by Disability LIB.
In this section you will find the following films
The films looks at leadership in Disabled Peoples Organisation. This covers what leaders in organisations can do to be influential, build capacity, improve effectiveness and boost performance at a time of financial crisis and political uncertainty. This includes work from the DPO leadership workshops run by Disability LIB and Essex Coalition of Disabled People and the Ambassador programme by Equalities National Council that focused on the leadership of Disabled People from Black Minority and Ethnic (BME) communities.
The films also cover the work by Alliance for Inclusive Education, Darlington Association on Disability, Disability Equality North West and Norfolk Coalition of Disabled People about what leadership means to young people, and how organisations can be better at including them. The work builds on the 'Pushing for Change - The Role of Disabled People's Organisations in Developing Young Disabled Leaders of the Future' research by ALLFIE. Baroness Jane Campbell of Surbiton DBE said about the report; 'Young disabled people make perfect leaders because they learn through experience how to overcome barriers. If they can apply this experience to life in general, they will often unlock some of the barriers all people face in life. Disabled people have already shown leadership in public involvement and inclusive communication; or how to build mutually supportive communities. This project will help unlock more of this talent’.
